At the February 11, Meeting members and guests heard a presentation from Ms. Gabriela (Gabby) Camacho, the newly elected City Treasurer, City of Lynwood, who is also the Activities Director for Lynwood High School. In addition, Mr. Freddy Hernandez, After Schools Site Coordinator, described his responsibilities as a contractor to LUSD with EduCare Foundation.

Gabby mentioned she is seeking a teacher to get a Rotary Interact Group started again at Lynwood High School. Also Freddy will contact Fernando and Tila Milllan, teachers at Roosevelt ES, about getting Youthact groups started at other elementary schools within LUSD.

Ms. Camacho has been a teacher for fifteen years at Lynwood High School and five years ago she obtained her position as Activities Director for the school. It has been through hard work and dedication that she helps students find opportunities in clubs, school activities, cultural events and more. She encourages students to make the best use of their time by learning new skills in after-school programs and to polish the skills they already posse. For example, by listening closely to the needs of her students, organizing them, doing fundraiser activities and submitting applications they were able to get a Band Director for the Band Program.

Before the speaker's presentation, Club President Martina Rodriguez mentioned that she attended the District 5280 Breakfast meeting at the Westin Hotel near LAX. She also mentioned that the District needs a club representative to attend a meeting relating to Rotary international peace issues. Daniel said he would attend the first meeting, pending selection of another club member to attend the projected quarterly meetings.

Marisela Santana, Public Information Officer for the City of Lynwood, announced again the annual luncheon for Children with Special Needs, Sunday, Feb 28, 11 am – 3 pm, Bateman Hall. The free luncheon is provided by the City of Luncheon, but advance reservations are required.

Veronica Ledesma, Field Representative for Congresswoman Janice Hahn, provided flyers for two coming events: Alzheimer's Community Forum, Feb 18, Thur, 10 -11:30 am, Drew University of Medicine, Keck Auditorium; and Feb 24, Wed, 9 – 11:30 am, Government on the Go! , AltaMed Health Services, 3820 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. Lynwood, Information provided for personal assistance relating to Federal Government services, also a time to talk personally with the congresswoman about her agenda in Congress.

Also there is an important event on Sat, Feb 20, 10 am at Plaza Mexico. It is the Ground Breaking Ceremony for a new development. This is an important event for the City of Lynwood and all Rotary members should try to attend as a show of support. Marisela Santana, Public Information Officer, for the City of Lynwood, will bring flyers about the event at the Feb 18 Rotary meeting.
