Lynwood Rotary Meeting Update 03-05-2015

For the meeting on March 5, 2015 12pm – 1:30pm , in the absence of the planned speaker, Marvin Aceves, members and guests heard a description of the Feed the Homeless Activity, held on Sunday, March 1. Rotary Youthact members and some of their parents from Roosevelt ES and from Helen Keller ES, with the overall leadership of Tila and Fernando Millan, participated in helping serve food to people at a homeless shelter in a big warehouse on Atlantic Ave. in Long Beach. The food was prepared and brought by Tila and Fernando with individual financial contributions from some Rotary members. Daniel and Jim Morton and Joe Wang and his wife participated. Daniel passed around photos showing the Youthact and some of their parents helping out at the shelter. It was noted that this is an example of the great experiences that the Lynwood Rotary Youthact partiicpants gain from these events. It was noted that the homeless people (about 150 people spent the night, sleeping in portable beds) represented a wide spectrum of people and ages, many of whom did not look like our images of “homeless” people.

Other coming community activities include a' women's month event, as well as a cancer walk, run event scheduled for June.

Daniel again mentioned the planned Youthact participation in the registration for the Annual LA Marathon Race. The race is on Sunday, March 15, and the registration day is on Saturday, March 14. Rotary members and guests who would like to accompany this group should coordinate in the coming week with Tila and Fernando. Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers and programs for our weekly Rotary meetings. In particular, we encourage everyone to talk to individuals about being a speaker, and to provide us with contact information, so we can follow up for specific meeting dates.
