For the meeting on April 2,  2015  12pm – 1:30pm , members and guests heard, watched and participated in  the program presented by Ms. Guadalupe M. Rodriguez, Medical Staff Trainer and BLS Instructor, and Health Information Technology.

In introducing her, Daniel noted that Ms. Rodriguez had previously presented CPR instruction at a January meeting.  In recognition that  April is Earthquake Preparedness Month, Guadalupe agreed to present a program on first aid techniques.  In the event of a major earth quake, or the big earthquake that could occur in our lives, referred to as “El Grande”, everyone should be prepared to take care of themselves for the first 24 to 36 hours.

Guadalupe displayed a variety first aid supplies that can be purchased at local drug stores, and stores like, 99Cent Stores, and which are needed for first aid treatments.  These include various sizes of bandages and gauze, splints for broken bones, and rubber gloves.  The latter are particularly needed to avoid having any skin exposure to blood.  She showed how to apply gauze and then bandages to stop bleeding; also how to temporarily apply splints for broken bones.  At one point, participants who took the role of victims and those who were supposed to be the care givers, were told to practice removing their rubber gloves, on which had been applied some shaving cream, which simulated blood.  The object was to remove the gloves without touching any of the shaving cream.

After stopping bleeding through compresses,  and also after applying tourniquets to stop severe bleeding, she noted that it is important to move the injured person to medical treatment immediately.  As with the previous CPR instruction, this presentation reminds every one of the importance of receiving formal training and practice, which can result in saving lives in emergency situations.

Before the presentation, Daniel talked about the events in the last two weeks pertaining to the passing of Jim Morton, to include last week’s special Rotary meeting, entitled Memories of Jim Morton, at which about 75 people attended, followed by the Celebration of Life for Jim Morton at the Greater Emmanuel Temple Church, on Friday evening, March 27, 6 – 9 pm.

He showed the beautiful and memorable program for that event that was mostly written by Martina Rodriguez and Maria (Lulu) Quinonez, and produced by Tamana, daughter of Rotary President Rajen.

Daniel mentioned the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, scheduled for Saturday, April 4, at Lynwood City Park.  Daniel mentioned that he could not attend due to being out of town for the coming week, but several persons present indicated their intention to attend.  Martina Rodriguez, in her role as the President Elect for Lynwood Rotary, described her plan for publicizing in advance, fireworks sales at the Rotary fireworks stand, that involves ticket purchases in advance.  It was agreed that this could be a productive way to increase sales at the Rotary fireworks stand this year.

For the coming meeting, Ramon Rodriguez will run the meeting.  Although Daniel will be out of town, he mentioned that the author of books about  American History, Craig McDonald, will be the speaker next week.  His previous presentation during the last year was very informative and interesting!    Also, everyone was encouraged to publicize the presentation of Rafael Martinez, an actor in the movie currently in theaters, entitled, McFarland USA, scheduled for the Rotary meeting on April 16.  Particularly anyone in high school or college that is possibly interested in film production and acting as a career, will be interested in meeting with Rafael Martinez, who at age 22, was selected as one of the actors for this inspiring film!
