At the April 7th meeting, members and guests heard and participated in discussions with Maria Quinionez (Lulu) about community events and also about Rotary events in the Lynwood community.

Lulu mentioned that the scheduled speaker, Rev. Nisa Stewart, Pastor of Greater Emanuel Temple, City of Lynwood, was unexpectedly required to attend to another event, so Lulu provided some thoughts about the direction that the Lynwood Rotary Club should take.  As a member of Rev. Stewart's church, Lulu brought several guests from her church as a show of interest in the Rotary club's activities within the community. The guests from her church indicated that they were willing to get involved and to support specific events.   (Rev. Stewart is now scheduled to be the speaker at the May 12 meeting.)

One concept is that the club should choose activities and projects through which the club membership will get involved and also will attract people within the community to participate and also to join the Rotary club.

It was mentioned that long time member Oliver Conner had a heart attack and died apparently late the previous day.  This was news to everyone.  It was said that Oliver had not attended a meeting for more than a month.  This sad news generated comments how club members should contact fellow members when they have not been attending meetings or otherwise had not been in communication with other club members.  Lulu coined a new phrase:  “the Oliver Effect.”  We all should show concern for our fellow members through regular communications when members have been absent and have not been heard from.  At the suggestion of Ramon Rodriguez , it was agreed that Martina Rodriguez will order flowers whenever it is known that a memorial event will be held for Oliver.  Lulu emphasized the theme of everyone communicating with each other, and suggested that some of the weekly meetings be focused on group inter-communications, as a substitute for the weekly speakers.  Ramon Rodriguez urged all members to call other members when they have not heard from them recently.

Before Lulu's presentation, President Martina Rodriguez mentioned that at the Rotary District Breakfast on Apr 5, Rotary youth were very much involved.  She also mentioned the coming Rotary District conference on Apr 28, 29, 30, and May 1.

Daniel displayed a large number of photos from the  Annual Easter Egg Hunt, organized by the City of Lynwood Department of Recreation, and held on Sat. April 26, from 11am to 1:30 pm at the Lynwood Park.  (The photos and a CD  of the photos will be given to Mark Flores for dissemination by the Recreation Department.)  Maria Quinonez (Lulu) and Daniel Miller attended.  The Lynwood Rotary Club was mentioned several times in the announcements by Recreation Staff as a sponsor of the event!  The financial support from Rotary helped pay for the gift baskets given out to winners of the easter egg hunt competitions.  Lulu mentioned other donations from community supporters for this annual event.

At the Easter Egg Hunt event, there was a booth for the annual Relay for Life event, organized by the American Cancer Society.   This year the event will be Sat, June 25 to Sun, June 26, 9  am – 9 am.  Club Secretary, Maria Quinonez (Lulu) will take the lead, as she did last year, in organizing a Lynwood Rotary Team for this 24 hour event.  Last year the Lynwood Club was a major participant in this event, both as to financial contributions and as to participation in the event.  Rotary Club members and friends are encouraged to again participate and to financially support this annual Relay for Life event in Lynwood.

At the conclusion of the meeting, there was a period of silence, in memory of Oliver Conner.
