At  the  May  14th  meeting there was  a change of location, due to all the rooms in Bateman Hall being used for a special youth training event sponsored jointly by the City of Lynwood and the Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD).  Members  and  guests met in the community and transit center building at the southwest corner of Bullis Road. & Martin Luther King Blvd.

The two scheduled speakers, Marvin Aceves and Maria Coronel from the Lynwood branch of the BBVA Compass Bank, had conflicts in their schedule that prevented them from participating in this meeting.

Conveniently, a guest provided a brief presentation as follows.  Alfred Castellanos, teacher and coach at Hosler Middle School talked about a project his is involved in at his school.  Mr. Castellanos said he is concerned about the very urban appearance of his school campus and has embarked upon a series of landscaping and planting projects to improve the appearance of the campus.  Just to mention one of his projects, he noted the attractive appearance of the Stanford University campus, noting, for example a large entrance way with bordered with palms.  He described a walkway at Hosler, where he has now planted rows of palms.  After his very interesting brief presentation, Alfred Castellanos has now been scheduled to be the speaker for the June 20th weekly meeting.

Club Secretary, Maria (Lulu) Quinonez, made a presentation on the coming Relay For Life event at Lynwood Park, June 27-28.  She explained that this event organized in many locations throughout the country and in 20 other countries, is the world’s largest fundraising event to end cancer.  For a 24 hour period, each team is asked to have a representative on the track all times, while entertainment, music, and fun activities keep things lively.  Lulu encouraged the Lynwood Rotary Club to organize a team and volunteered to lead this effort.  Several in attendance voiced their willingness to participate.

Speaking of volunteering, both Lulu and Daniel Miller mentioned the importance of  participating in the club’s annual fireworks stand sales, from July 1 through July 4, both noting that this is the main annual fund raising event for the Lynwood Rotary Club.  Lulu volunteered to produce and distribute a signup sheet for members and others who volunteer to work this important event.  Hopefully, the signup sheet will be ready for members and others to sign up at the May 21 weekly meeting.

Daniel gave a brief presentation about the history of Union Station in downtown LA and the fact that last year in May 2014 Union Station celebrated its 75th birthday.  He mentioned this in part because next week’s speaker will feature the principal volunteer for travel information at Union Station, Don Young.  As noted in last week’s and this week’s meeting updates, Mr. Young was honored for his 19 years of service at Union Station, by being featured in one of the art works that were commissioned for the 75th Anniversary Celebration, a year ago.  So, Daniel encouraged members and guests to bring others interested hearing about Don Young’s experiences, to include in his earlier days, he says, of traveling to 50 countries throughout world.  Daniel ended the meeting by promoting two events scheduled for Sat, May 16.  In the morning at Bateman Hall, an opportunity to see the final design for the new Lynwood Linear Park, and to help choose the designs and themes for the mosaics that will be installed in the park.  And also, Daniel encouraged everyone to come to the Lynwood Festival of the Arts, at Lynwood High School, from 10 am to 3 pm.
