At the May 21 Meeting, members and guests heard Mr. Don Young talk about his experiences as a volunteer at Union Station in DTLA  (Downtown LA) provide travel information at the historic information booth.  Mr. Young took exception to being called “Principal Volunteer” explaining that there are several volunteers who equal his 19 years experience in working as a volunteer at Union Station.  While the Travelers Aid organization no longer exists in LA, (the current organization is the LA Convention Bureau), Don described his experience with Travelers Aid, including being assigned to the Downtown LA Greyhound Station.  Don prefers to give credit to others, all working together as a team.

Don also talked about some of his experiences in the LA Region and noted that as an African-American he finds that things have changed for the better.  He noted that he grew up in Oklahoma where his family owned and operated a mortuary.  In LA he has experienced a more open community.  This he stated, is compared to the LA Region of forty years ago, including Lynwood.

After Don’s presentation the Club Secretary, Maria (Lulu) Quinionez, talked again about the coming Relay For Life, organized by the American Cancer Society.  The event will be at Lynwood Park, during a 24 hour period, June 27-28.  Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times, while entertainment, music, and fun activities keep things lively.  It is planned that Lynwood Rotary will have a team.  Lulu also mentioned that she will circulate a sign-up sheet for the Lynwood Fireworks Stand, July 1 – July 4.

Daniel described the community meeting held the previous evening (May 20) at Bateman Hall, which he attended.  The meeting concerned the Lynwood Transit Area Strategic Plan which will result in a specific plan in a year.  The plan area includes the Green Line Long Beach Station and extends to the Alameda St. and Imperial Hwy Corridors, which area contains significant transit-oriented development opportunity sites.  To increase attendance at future community meetings regarding this planning process, Daniel recommended that publicity efforts include the Block Watch Captains organization, the Senior Citizen Center, the Greater Lynwood Chamber of Commerce, and also to use the communication opportunities through the Lynwood Unified School District.

Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers and programs for our weekly meetings.
