At our Lynwood Rotary Club meeting on Thursday noon, July 17, members and guests were treated to getting acquainted with our speaker, Josh Garcia. As past president Daniel explained in the introduction, Josh and Daniel sat next to each other at the training workshop in May, held by Phantom Fireworks, required for all operators of Phantom Fireworks stands this year. Josh talked about his experience operating a Phantom fireworks stand in Huntington Park for his church. This was the first year that the church had a fire works stand. Josh also talked about his college experiences graduating from BIOLA with BA and MA degrees, and about his outlook in life with his wife and one child, who will give birth to their second child in a few days. And he talked about his just being accepted to the Police Academy for the LAX Police Department. He will start the six month academy training in a few days, and Daniel asked if he would come back after the training, in the spring of 2015, to be the speaker at a Lynwood Rotary meeting at that time.

At the Rotary Board meeting, held at 11:30 am before the regular meeting, among other things, the Board approved the first step for membership for Ramon Rodriguez ( as a returning member) and also for Marvin Aceves. The proposed Rotary budget was presented, and Board members will be requested to approve the budget at the scheduled Board meeting, next week, that is, Thursday, July 24. Also funds were approved for paying for 1000 hot dogs for the coming National Night Out event, which our member, Lucy Avalos will provide for participants at this annual event.

Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers and programs for our weekly Rotary meetings. In particular, we encourage everyone to talk to individuals about being a speaker, and to provide us with contact information, so we can follow up for specific meeting dates.
