At the Lynwood Rotary Club meeting on Thursday noon, August 28 members and guests heard and saw the presentation by the Coach for the Kodiaks Wheelchair Basketball Team, Coach Hector Rodriguez. With the Team Coach, was his wife, and there was also a team member present.

This team has been practicing weekly at the City of Lynwood gym. Members live in the LA area, with about one third living in Lynwood. One of their hand-outs was a photo of the 13 members on their team. The team participates competitively in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. In addition, Coach Rodriguez noted that the team plays in exhibition games for schools, hospitals, and expos in an effort to inspire the disabled and non-disabled community and set an example to other disabled individuals.

As explained by Coach Rodriguez, the team is supported by the Primera Iglesia Bautista (First Baptist Church) in Inglewood, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. A detailed budget was part of the handouts. Funds are needed and much appreciated. For more information, the Team Coach, Hector Rodriguez, can be reached at (323) 578-1576.

It was nice to see extra guests who had come specifically to hear and meet the speaker, Team Coach Hector Rodriguez!

Also, at the meeting, Fernando Millan, teacher and adult leader of the Rotary Youthact Club at Roosevelt ES, along with his wife, Tila, also a teacher at Roosevelt ES and youth leader. Fernando provided an update on the plans for participating in the annual Rotary District picnic and boat races (with hand made cardboard boats) at the Redondo Beach Seaside Lagoon on Sunday, September 14. All members of the Lynwood Rotary Club are encouraged to come to the picnic, along with the youth and their parents.
