At the September 4 meeting, members and guests received presentations from two speakers. First we heard from Felipe Velazquez, President of the Social Justice Coalition. Mr. Velazquez talked about the planned celebration of Fiesta Patrias, a Latin American annual celebration of independence. Fiesta Patrias is a festival in recognition of the annual day of celebration in the following countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Friday, September 12, at Bateman Hall 7:00 pm to 11:30 pm, the independence of these six countries will be celebrated. Tickets are $25.00 per person or $200.00 for a table of ten.

This presentation was followed by awards that were given to Rotary members recognizing their service to the community during 2013-2014.

The major point of the meeting was the induction of three new members into Lynwood Rotary Club: Ramon Rodriguez (previously a long term member) and Marvin Aceves, and Maria Quinionez. The induction was performed by District 5280  Assistant Governor (ADG) Ms. Freddie King. Ms. King also talked about the scheduled annual visit of the District Governor, Ms. Elsa M. Gilham, scheduled for the Thursday noon meeting on Oct. 2. Ms. King mentioned the importance of this annual event for the Lynwood Club and invited all members to attend this event and also to bring family members and friends.

Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers and programs for our weekly Rotary meetings. In particular, we encourage everyone to talk to individuals about being a speaker, and to provide us with contact information, so we can follow up for specific meeting dates.
