At the September 10 meeting, on Wednesday, Lynwood Rotary members and guests attended the JOINT MEETING with South Gate Rotary Club at their meeting place which is located at the South Gate Park Auditorium. The speaker was Senator Ricardo Lara, California Senate District 33. His district includes Lynwood and South Gate, along with other cities in the SE part of LA County. Senator Lara talked about his leadership in several proposed bills, including a provision for multi-lingual education, as a way of helping students become more competitive in the rapidly evolving world-wide economy. The Senator also addressed his involvement in legislation that puts limits on the percent of foreign students attending the University of California system in order to ensure adequate room for students from California. The Senator in encouraging questions from the audience, received several questions about the opportunities of cities to encourage more development for more jobs, to which he responded that is one of the issues that is continuing to be pursued in the legislature this legislative term.

The Fiestas Patrias event was held on Friday, September 12 at Bateman Hall, which celebrated the annual Independence Days for Mexico and for the Central American countries of Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. This well-attended event, in addition to delicious food and refreshments, featured a full evening of song and dance and was attended by members of the Lynwood City Council, as well as by many leaders in the Lynwood community.
