At the October 16 meeting, Lynwood Rotary members and guests heard the presentation of Ramon Rodriguez, owner and operator for 26 years of the Ace Hardware Store on Atlantic Ave. in Lynwood. Also a long time member of the Lynwood Rotary Club, Mr. Rodriguez described his experience working in a hardware type of store before he decided he decided to open his own business. For a year he continued to work in this store while starting his own hardware store.

In order to be competitive with large chain hardware stores, his store provided more customized service to customers, to include providing knowledgeable advice about home and business repairs and upgrades. During the time for questions, when asked what could the City of Lynwood do to help local businesses to survive and to thrive, he responded that a broad-based active Lynwood Chamber of Commerce would be very helpful to Lynwood businesses.

Before Mr. Rodriguez's presentation, the audience heard from Dr. Keith Curry, CEO for Compton Community College District. Dr. Curry outlined many ways that El Camino College Compton Center is a valuable community resource. Dr. Curry provided facts about proposed Measure C, which will cost property owners $25/ year per $100,000 assessed - not market - property value. If passed, the new bond measure will complete the facilities upgrade needed at the 62 year-old Compton Campus and enable the District to qualify for state matching funds for buildings. Measure C will repair or replace leaky roofs, outdated electrical wiring, deterioting gas, electrical and sewer lines; improve fire safety and security on campus; as well as upgrade outdated computer labs and classroom technology.

Also before the main speaker, Felipe Velazquez, President, Organizacion Migrantes en el exterioral services de nuestra conciudanos, talked about the coming 3 day event, Dec 5 - Dec 7, by a dance group, Danza Ritmia Popular, from the Universidad Autonima de Baja California.
