For the meeting on April 30,  2015  12pm – 1:30pm ,  members and guests listened to Mark Flores, Director of the Recreation & Community Services Department, provide an informative power point presentation of this year’s Weight Loss Challenge Competition.
 
For this competition, the categories are men, women, and four person teams.  Some of the data Mark provided for the 2015 Weight Loss Challenge are as follows:  184 participants; 48 Teams; Prize Pool of $5,700; Average LBS lost per team, 37 lbs; Average LBS lost per person, 9.2 lbs; Total Pounds lost, 1,774.2 (second highest total )  (since the annual program started).  Prizes for 1st, 2nd,& 3rd Place winners, from the Men’s Division, the Women’s Division, and the First Place Team, all received cash prizes.  For the first place team, each of the four team members received $750.00 each.  The slogan for the winning team was “Lose Weight, Gain Confidence.”
 
Among the comments were the expressed hope that all participants are provided information about proper diet, to avoid gaining back the weight loss. Relating to opportunities for residents to be physically active during the year, one  comment was about the lengthy closure of the city’s pool (natatorium).  Mark explained the extensive repairs completed and that the pool will re-open in mid-May, and he explained that the pool is open during the year except during the winter months.
 
Mark mentioned some of the coming events that his department is responsible for, to include:  May 14, Teen Parent Conference, which will provide advice on financial and other resources available for teen parents;  also, Sat, May 16, the Festival of Arts at Lynwood HS, 10am- 3pm; also throughout May, sign-ups for AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization), noting that Lynwood has the largest program in SE LA County; also, plans are underway for the July 4th Fireworks Program at Lynwood City Park, with fireworks starting at 9 pm.  And Mark mentioned the Sheriff’s Fun Run event on Sep 19.
 
Although not mentioned at the meeting, Daniel notes that it is time to recruit workers for the annual Rotary fireworks sales stand event, which takes place, July 1 thru July 4.  Especially needed are high school and college age volunteers, in addition to the need for the Rotary membership to show up and help with the fireworks sales during the four days when the fireworks stand will be open.  This is the major fund raising event for the Lynwood Rotary club each year.
