At the May 28 Meeting, members and guests heard and participated in discussions about coming events within the Lynwood community.  At the end of the meeting, Ivan Ezquivel,  a graduate of Salesian High School in Boyle Heights, as well as an employee of Rotary member Lucy Avalos’ catering company, presented some information about Salesian High School.  A more complete presentation is now scheduled for the June 11 meeting.  Tomy Loreto. Sports Administrator at the school, will talk about athletic programs at the high school.  And it is planned that the Vice Principal for Salesian High School will talk about the academic programs and accomplishments of the school.

There was a discussion led by the Club Secretary, Maria (Lulu) Quinonez, of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event scheduled for a 24 hour period June 27-28 at Lynwood Park.  There was a consensus that the club would participate as a team.  Lulu mentioned that the participant rules allow for a shorter period of participation, say 4-6 hours, instead of a previously announced requirement that at least one member of each team must be on the track during the entire 24 period of the event.  Since donations are expected, there was a discussion of individual donations, each to be on behalf of our Rotary club.

Lulu also distributed copies of the sign up list for staffing of the fireworks stand, July 1- July 4.  Martina Rodriguez, incoming Rotary President, showed tickets she had printed for advance payments for fireworks at the Lynwood stand, as a marketing tool for encouraging people in the community to buy fireworks at the Lynwood fireworks stand.  Daniel mentioned that Fernando and Tila are encouraging older Youthact members from Roosevelt Elementary School and their parents to sign up for working the fireworks stand this year.

Marisela Santana, Public Information Officer for the City of Lynwood, announced a variety of coming events, including the LA County Sheriff’s Century Station first ever open house at the Century Station, that was held on Saturday, May 30.  Activities included: an array of Sheriff’s Department displays, the helicopter, the K-9 Unit, the Swat Team, horses, the Motor Unit, and Burt the Camel Deputy.

As to coming events, Marisela talked about the Juneteenth Unity Festival that will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2pm – 6pm at Lynwood City Park.  Also, on the same day as our next Rotary meeting, June 4, there will be a sidewalk CPR Training at the Lynwood Senior Center, from 11am – 2pm.  The training will be provided in collaboration with the American Heart Association, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department and its Emergency Medical Services Bureau.  Members and guests are encouraged to go to this training event at 11 am and then to come to the Rotary meeting at 12 Noon.

Marisela provided information about water conservation requirements, given the state’s continuing four year drought.  The City Council has declared a Level 2 Water Supply Shortage condition which mandates conservation measures and enforcement provisions.  Water consumption must meet a conservation target of 15 percent.  This issue generated a lot of discussion as to the coming requirements and changing procedures in our use of water.

Everyone is encouraged to suggest speakers and programs for our weekly meetings.
