Lynwood Rotary Meeting Update 06-11-2015
At the June 11th Meeting, members and guests heard and participated in presentations from Ivan Esquivel, graduate from Salesian High School in Boyle Heights.
Ivan is well-known by members and regular guests of the Lynwood Rotary Club because is an employee of the catering firm owned and operated by Lucy Avalos, a longtime member of the Lynwood Club. Ivan talked on behalf of Tommy Loreto, Sports Administrator, and also on behalf of the Vice Principal, Moises Delgado. At a future meeting, they may be able to be the speakers.
Salesian High School has a strong athletic program, especially in soccer. Also, the school has helped with athletic programs at adjacent parks for the benefit of the local community in ELA. Salesian High School has continued to strengthen its academic programs and Ivan notes that now students can take 25 classes that give college credit, thus helping the students to graduate sooner from two and four year colleges. Salesian has also provided help with improving the success of students attending the nearby Roosevelt High School in ELA.
Another facet of the work of Salesian High School is their work in obtaining and distributing food for the needy. Of interest, is Ivan’s mention of the Brothers at the school (Staff who are not yet priests) working with the poor in the neighborhood. And Ivan recounted meeting the renown Mother Teresa, when he was in the fourth grade.
Before and after Ivan’s presentation, there was discussion and coordination about coming events. Club Secretary Maria (Lulu) Quinonez further coordinated the planned participation of the club in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life 24 hour event, in Lynwood Park on June 27 – 28. Several members of the club have already made donations to the American Cancer Society and more donations are expected for this fund raising event.
Lulu and Daniel talked about the importance of all members and interested quests in signing up for work shifts at the annual Fireworks Stand sales. Daniel mentioned that after the meeting, he would be joining a planning meeting of Rotary Youthact members with Tila and Fernando Millan at Roosevelt ES. Daniel noted that youth and their parents are needed to help staff the Fireworks Stand for the four days.
Concerning Choose Health LA Kids, this is a joint effort of St. Francis Medical Center and Lynwood Community Parents. The event will be on the Main Lawn of St. Francis Medical Center, Tuesday, 9:30am – 12 Noon pm, June 16. There will be a Photo Voice Exhibition, Exhibition, Exposing Unhealthy Food Marketing.
