At the September 24th Meeting, the members and guests heard a presentation from Rotary District 5280 Governor, DJ Sun.

This was the annual visit by the District Governor to the Lynwood Rotary Club. The governor was introduced by the Assistant District Governor for the Lynwood Rotary Club, Ms. Viola Rica. Mr. DJ Sun was born in Korea but obtained his bachelor and master’s degree from a university in Illinois. At that time he met his wife to be and they have three children. He has an extensive business career in investment management. Within District 5280, he has extensive leadership at the Little Korea Rotary Club. His world travels for Rotary include two trips to Korea, both related to providing funding and medical care for surgery for children with cleft palate.

The Governor thanked everyone for the warm welcome and gracious hospitality. And he noted: “with 79 years of history, you are one the District’s oldest clubs.”

The Governor started his remarks, noting the long history of the Lynwood Club with its numerous accomplishments over the years. He expressed his hope that the Lynwood Club can over time regain its larger membership in order to be able to carry out more and bigger projects.

The Governor gave out three District Governor’s Citations. One commendation was for the member with the most years as a member, Rajen Dhaliwal. Another commendation was for the member who has brought in the most new members, Ramon Rodriguez. And the member commended for his devotion to the Lynwood Club, District Events and Projects, was Daniel Miller. Rajen’s daughter, Tamana, accepted the certificate on behalf of her father, who is away in India. Also note that the District support staff accompanying the Governor, remarked that it was good to see a young person, such as Omar, involved in the work of the club.

The numerous topics discussed by the Governor and his accompanying support staff, included the following areas as being potentially very helpful to the Lynwood Club in increasing its membership and its involvement in community service projects: a new membership category within District 5280, Young Professionals; also opportunities for the club to develop projects that are funded by various Rotary grant funds. A first step is that two members of the club have to be certified through a Rotary Webinar Class that will be next held in March and April 2016. The website training explains the grant programs available and the procedures for clubs to develop proposals to be funded. Another support program from District 5280 is that all club members will be better able to be a part of networking within the District, to enhance communication between members in all the clubs within the District.
